LARGER PRINT VERSION 6x9 inches Autumn 1917 Carl O’Neill is on the run from the Army and himself. Returned from Europe on recuperative leave, he’d rather die than go back to the trenches. He assumes a dead man’s name and leaves his home and family behind him, only to be dumped off the train in the small prairie town of Mackenzie, Saskatchewan. Seriously ill and stranded, Carl has no choice but to confront the demons that drive him – and his growing feelings for the former Red Cross nurse who saves his life. Naomi Franklin is no stranger to secrets and personal demons. Struggling with the trauma of rape and her experiences in a front-line field hospital, Naomi can’t bear to close the eyes of another young man whose life has ended far too soon. She’ll nurse the stranger who lands on her father’s doorstep and then send him on his way. But looking into Carl’s blue eyes makes her feel like a woman again, while the all-too-familiar shadows behind them touch her heart. When both their lives come crashing down around them, can Carl and Naomi overcome secrets and lies to find each other again?

Deliverance Jennie Marsland 9780987783226 Books

Naomi Franklin has a secret. And we don't know what it's completely about until the RCMP are involved.

Luckily, for her, Ben MacNeil aka Carl from the previous book "Shattered" is there to help. He doesn't have anything of value in his current state (arrested for drunken disorderly conduct on a train) but he values her.

These two are burned out by their experiences in the war. Despite their injuries they reach out to each other. Together, they find forgiveness and redemption of sins.

Carl isn't just a drunk soldier with a tortured past - with Naomi's help he's now in recovery and has something of value in his life. A first for this quick tempered character but something I'm relieved to see.

Two broken birds of war find peace with each other and a love that heals wounds.

I enjoyed the writing style immensely and felt like I was a part of their healing process. Great to see Carl again!

Deliverance Jennie Marsland 9780987783226 Books Reviews

I'm so glad I had the opportunity to read this wonderful book. This author brings to life the effects of war on both men and women. The story starts when Carl O'Neill ends up in Mackenzie, Saskatchewan at death's door. Naomi Franklin accepts him at her father's house, since he's the local doctor in the town. Her father is out delivering a baby, so Naomi, a nurse who's recently returned from war torn Europe, takes care of him, and she's immediately drawn to him.
Carl is on the run. He's AWOL and has no intention of going back, since he knows he cannot go overseas again. He tells Naomi his name is Ben, along with numerous other lies, and the guilt is eating him alive. Carl fights his growing attraction to Naomi, but neither of them can resist it. After telling Naomi all his secrets, they share a passion-filled night, but Carl leaves the next morning, because he doesn't feel he is the right man for Naomi.
The rest of the story tells how they overcome their demons to find their way back to each other. I loved this story. From the prairies of western Canada to the east coast of Nova Scotia, this author paints a vivid picture of life during these troubled times. I highly recommend this great book, which is truly a story of Carl's deliverance.
Set in Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia, Canada, during WW1, Deliverance is a tale of loss and pain and redemption through love. The story follows a minor character from Jennie Marsland's Shattered, Carl O'Neil, who has served in the war in Europe and returns a broken man. Hurt and ill, he is taken in by nurse Naomi Franklin and her father.

Carl has many demons to beat, traumas from his childhood and his time overseas, fighting in the war. These make him brusque and distant, prone to fits of violent anger and drink. Naomi has her own demons, due to serving as a war-time nurse, but also from bad experiences at home. As the two spend time together and secrets are revealed, the reader often wonders if love can fix all and if there is hope for either of them.

Jennie Marsland created two real-as-life and lovable characters. Despite their pain, against all odds, they keep fighting and striving for happiness and forgiveness. As in Shattered, these aren't heroes fighting huge wars or having superhuman powers. They aren't loud. They are quiet and courageous, with an admirable strength of spirit. Even when they sometimes failed, even when they temporarily gave up, I still found myself cheering them on, sure they would overcome the obstacles to find happiness together.

The secondary characters are lovingly depicted and the setting rings true. A lot of research has obviously gone into the era and place, so that every detail stands out, perfectly described. I had a minor quibble with a detail regarding Carl's recovery from his illness, but I was willing to suspend disbelief because the story was so well told.

Marsland's writing style is smooth and clean, drawing the reader in easily. The dialogues feel natural and the thought flow is clear. I sometimes found the pace a tad slow, though, and the thought processes a little too long. However, it didn't distract me from enjoying the story and rooting for the protagonists. Especially since we get to have a happy ending, after all.

I highly recommend Deliverance by Jennie Marsland. I think it would appeal to fans of historical romance and romance in general. It is a beautiful story, beautifully told.

Deliverance is the sequel to Jennie Marsland's Shattered which I also enjoyed very much.

I rate this book 4.5 stars.

Received a free book in exchange for an honest review.
I just finished reading "DELIVERANCE" written by Jennie Marsland. It's a love story filled with tenderness! I really prefer this one.
This is the sequel of Ms. Marsland SHATTERED which I loved very much! She really was able to describe the reality of the people's lives during the 1914-18 war, like the fact, that some soldiers came back from the war as wounded men morally and physically. Even nurses have dealt with the soldiers's suffering. I loved her two main characters Carl O'Neill and Naomi Franklin. They both had secrets that were part of their lives and weren't willing and ready to share. As their friendship grew, they will share a mutual trust and slowly fall in love! I like the style of writing of Ms. Marsland's realistic world of WW1. This is the second book that I read by this author and again, I was not disappointed. As soon as I started to read the first chapter, her story got me hooked and I could not put it down. Ms. Marsland is a great writer to be known. I will definitely be reading more books by this author. I highly recommend this book because it's a beautiful historical romance.
Great movie material.
A very well written and emotional book. The author really knows how to write a story and to pull you in emotionally with the characters.
A lovely sequel to Jennie's book SHATTERED... this story is that of Carl O'Neill, a secondary character from Shattered who is back from the front with significant issues. But you know, all he really needs is the love of a good woman, and he turns out to be a wonderful hero. Naomi has her own wounds that need healing, but she's strong and compassionate. They really earned their happy ending, and it was great being able to visit with the characters from the previous book in the end. A wonderful, tender read I couldn't put down.
